Shu’mata Camp
Shu ‘mata is a Maasai word meaning ‘heaven’ or ‘above the clouds’.
How fitting for this beautiful camp located at the foot of Kilimanjaro, deep in traditional Masai land, in an area known as the South or Private Amboseli. Five large tents, form a line on a hill with magnificent views in all directions. At the front of the property, bush savannah melts into the slopes of Kilimanjaro, towering above into the blue skies of Africa, so close that on a moonlit night, details of the glaciers can be visible.
The Mess Tent is divided into three different sections representing a safari through time: from vintage to safari baroque to Arabian Nights. It ‘s the perfect spot to relax while outside under the open sky, whilst a fireplace adds a true feeling of adventure and safari romance.
Seasonally the surrounding savannah bush teams with wildlife: herds of elephant, eland, zebra, wildebeest and Oryx as well as Grants and Thompson Gazelle. But at Shu’mata, there is more on offer than game alone. Here the emphasis is placed upon how the wildlife and local Maasai live together and about making the most of the stunning surroundings with a picnic on Kilimanjaro, Maasai experiences and trekking elephants across the Amboseli Ecosystem.
